The Intracoastal Residence is a design that took the “constraint” of a tight, narrow, pie-shaped lot and developed it into an exuberant series of gardens and a grand luxurious family home.
The street-facing façade is re-imagined with an extensive side entry courtyard which provides a spatial sequence to create anticipation and experiences prior to reaching the actual entrance. As a result, the entry canopy is orchestrated by light as it shines through perforations and creates beautiful patterns in the entrance courtyard and the foyer. These perforations also allow the abundant South Floridian natural sunlight to filter into the home in endlessly various patterns from the multiplicity of interior window configurations which nestle under the exterior canopies. The home is designed as a series of parallel walls interwoven and interlaced with interior gardens which intentionally blur the line between where the interior ends and the exterior begins.
The project was also created to serve the needs of a very active and extended family. The series of living spaces are meant to function just as flawlessly for the close-knit family of five as they do when they expand to entertain large groups for regular gatherings of all kinds. The interior spaces have enough warmth and intimacy to envelop smaller study groups, yet the family can fully open glass walls to extend into the patio, barbecue, and pool areas, creating one continuous entertainment space where guests move effortlessly between indoors and outdoors. The flexibility of this design allows the family the ability to expand and contract space easily depending upon what their schedules require on any given day, season, or holiday. Whether it is swimming in the horizon pool, jumping into kayaks from their personal dock, or just relaxing on the shore as they watch the boats drive by on the canal, this special home provides limitless opportunities to enjoy the South Florida lifestyle.
