Coconut Grove Residence

The Coconut Grove project exemplifies the immense power and value of interior architecture to be transformative. The most striking transformation of the original space is in the formal living area which has been re-imagined via a unique collaboration between RGA and internationally renowned lighting designer Johanna Grawunder.

When RGA was retained to work on the interior design of the project, the art collector client had purchased a new home that was considered “move in ready.” The original brief provided to RGA was simply to select and specify interior furnishings and make slight changes to the existing plan to make it feel like home for his new family. Upon careful consideration and with an understanding of the client and his art collection, RGA’s approach was to propose a series of “art interventions.” Having purchased art and considering the more substantial renovations as “art installations,” the client was able to embrace a more substantial interiors project. The result is a collection of significant interior architecture interventions that completely reconfigure the spaces.

The most striking transformation of the original space is in the formal living room area which has been utterly re-imagined via unique collaboration between RGA and internationally renowned lighting designer Johanna Grawunder entitled: “The Spiral Gold Circuit.” RGA proposed Rosso Levanto red marble to connect the fireplace with a new stairwell alcove. The Rosso Levanto was used in two finishes: a smooth honed and a rough acid etched characteristic of a stone wall. The light installation from Grawunder spatially amplified the connection between the two spaces and provided the main formal space with energy and dynamism. It is constructed from bronze and acrylic elements which magically weaves and simultaneously illuminate the space.

The family room and kitchen feature a unique new kitchen/shelving system designed by RGA for Italkraft called VEN 1000. It was created with light and mirrors to increase the sensation that the shelves are almost “floating” and to provide double reflections of various art and design objects the client wished to feature. The VEN 1000 system in the family room also seamlessly highlights the garden through the windows exposing a lush natural greenspace and welcoming it visually into the interior.

This project also vividly illustrates the transformative power of color combined with a client and designer who are both confident and bold with their choices. Visitors to the home are always most surprised and especially charmed by the colorways in the second floor which features a vibrant double direction degrade of Early Dawn, Sunrise and Lemongrass Yellows through to Fresh Dew, Spring Valley and Mint Chip green tones which visually evoke the emotion of a pastoral meadow where the client’s sheep sculptures clearly feel right at home.
