Rene Gonzalez Architects Red Exhibition for Miami Design District

(RED) Auction

The simple manipulation of space created mysterious conditions where beams appeared to float and columns continued to infinity, creating the illusion of limitless space and light and, like the intent of the (RED) Auction, provided optimism towards a future without AIDS.

For the exhibition design of the (RED) Auction, RGA established an ambiguous spatial condition within a 3-story hypostyle hall of the Miami Design District’s Moore Building. The simple manipulation of space created mysterious conditions where beams appeared to float and columns continued to infinity, creating the illusion of limitless space and light and, like the intent of the (RED) Auction, provided optimism towards a future without AIDS.

A satellite booth at the Design Miami/ tent in Miami Beach referenced the exhibition with a mirrored installation and hologram image of a singular work from the auction – a diamond ring by Sir John Ive and Marc Newson – displayed as a rotating hologram at the end of a tunnel bathed in red light.

The auction, hosted by artist Theaster Gates and architect Sir David Adjaye, in collaboration with singer Bono, and with the donation of matching funds by The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, raised a total of $10.5 million dollars to support the Global Fund to Fight AIDS and the Rebuild Foundation.
